How to Get Rid of Calcium Build Up in Pipes

Hard water contains a high level of minerals such as calcium. Hard calcium water is found naturally in some regions, and is harmless to your health. However, when this water dries in the pipes it will leave behind calcium deposits that can accumulate and eventually clog the flow of water. Remove calcium deposits, as soon as you notice that your sink is not draining properly.

Cleaning Solutions

A wide range of products, with different intensities, promise to eliminate calcium deposits inside pipes. Choose the softest product first, especially if the calcium deposits are new or if they are not completely blocking the plumbing pipes. Soft solutions do not damage the pipes and are not toxic, but they cannot remove all calcium residues. If this is the case, follow the cleaning solution with a harder calcium remover.

Mild solution

Sodium bicarbonate and white vinegar are natural cleaning solutions that are food grade and completely non-toxic. White vinegar is a mild acid that will form bubbles when you add baking soda and alkaline calcium buildup will be removed. To use, pour ½ cup of baking soda and then 2 cups of white vinegar down the drain. Let the solution bubble for five minutes before running hot water down the drain for 30 seconds. Finish by running cold water down the drain to eliminate everything. Repeat this process until the calcium blockage is gone.

Strong solution

Strong chemical cleaning solutions contain strong acids such as oxalic, phosphoric, or hydrochloric acids. These quickly and efficiently dissolve calcium deposits, but they are toxic. As such, always store them away from children or pets and keep both away from the area while you are working. Depending on the solution, wear gloves and protective glasses to ensure that you do not burn your skin or eyes. Always work in a well-ventilated area when you pour the solution down the drain and check the solution to ensure that it does not damage your pipes.

Prevention

Prevent calcium from accumulating in your water pipes by installing a water softener in your home. These machines are attached to your home’s water supply and they remove excess calcium chemically and minerals from the water. This will lengthen the life of the pipes and prevent other problems related to hard water, such as soap scum or lime.
