How to Make a Wooden Spice Rack

A wooden wall shelf is a great way to keep all your spices away from your countertops and save the main storage space for more important items. Make yourself a wooden spice rack with unique and customized features such as painted wood. It gives a new size to the width and depth of the shelves to perfectly store any brand of spices you use your family.

Instructions

  1. Place two short boards on either side of a longer piece so that boards make a “U”. Tap the boards together so they’re snug and pre-drill two holes evenly spaced on each side panel and into the rack; this will serve as the bottom shelf. Connect the three boards with wood screws.
  2. Slide the other shelf board in place parallel to the first shelf. Hold it in place and pre-drill two holes with uniform spacing on either side, through the sides and into the ends of the second shelf boards.
  3. Drill a 1/4 inch (0.6 cm) hole on each side panel, about 3 inches (7.5 cm) above each shelf and 1/2 inch (1.2 cm) from the front of the spice shelf. Insert two wood rods through the holes and secure them in place at each end with a light layer of wood glue. Give the glue about an hour to dry.
  4. Put spice shelf upside down and position the backboard on it. Predrill holes at the four corners and evenly along the side edges of the rear panel and into the side panels. Secure the backboard with wood screws.
  5. Hang the shelf for spices on the wall by screwing directly through the backboard and into the desired section of the wall.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use lightweight plaster anchors, if necessary, to hang heavier spices jars.
