Building a roof for a patio

A patio is an excellent addition to any home, allowing more space for entertainment, relaxation or play. Being an outdoor space, the elements of the outdoors can play an important role in relation to what you can do in the yard. There are several options for patio coverings when the elements of the outdoors are not a determining factor for the use of the yard, such as awnings, railings and roofs details. The ceilings are the most important application will ensure that rain or snow does not disrupt your activities or require extra maintenance.

  1. Get a building permit from your local area. As the patio covering will adhere to the house, a building permit is needed.
  2. Measure and plot the patio area for the roof covering.
  3. Dig a hole to pour into the base (at the end of the concrete slab where the roof will end). The concrete base will support the ends of the roof. The hole should be 3 feet (0.9m) deep by 8 inches (20cm) wide.
  4. Pour concrete into the hole. At the top, the rod must be inserted to 7 inches (17.5 cm) deep and must be kept in place until the concrete dries. There should be two of these, one at each end.
  5. Place a galvanized base support column with a 1 foot (30cm) diameter on top of the concrete foundation, separating the support beam for the roof and concrete.
  6. Anchor the support beam with treated wood to the galvanized base column. The support beam must be between 6-8 inches (15 to 20cm) tall.
  7. Attach a ledge with the existing bolts to attach the top plate or studs.
  8. Fix beams or galvanized metal brackets to the outgoing beam.
  9. Extend the roof using 2×4 wood planks to the end of the concrete slab. Make sure you have a slight slope to allow for rain runoff. Do not let the roof edge be less than 2 feet (60cm) from the edge of the property.
  10. Install support beams with 10 to 12 inches (25 to 30cm) galvanized brackets.
  11. Cover the support beams with 3/4 inch (1.8 cm) thick treated plywood.
  12. Cover with shingles or another roofing of your choice.
