Calculating Square Meters of Concrete
Concrete is a need for many projects throughout the home. If you’re going to make an entry or edge to a pool, one of the first things you should know is how much concrete will be needed to complete the work. To calculate the square footage of a concrete project, all you need to do is a few simple calculations.
How to
- Measure the length and width of the place where you’ll be placing the concrete.
- Multiply the length by the width to get the square footage. For example, if you plan to pour a concrete entrance that is 25 feet (7.6 m) long and 12 (3.7 m) wide, it will be 300 square feet (28 m 2).
- Measure all sides by an area that has no rectangle or square.
- Make a scale drawing of the area on graph paper.
- Divide the drawing into rectangles, squares and triangles.
- Look for an area for each section. For squares and rectangles, multiply the length by width. For triangles, multiply the base by the height and divide the product by two.
- Add the areas of each section to get the total area.
- To determine the thickness of the concrete by dividing the inches by 12, For example, if you want your entry to be 4 inches (10 cm) thick, divide 4 by 12 for 0.333 feet (10 cm) of concrete.
- Multiply the area by the thickness. For this example, multiply 300 times 0.33 to obtain 99.99 cubic feet (2.83 cu m) of concrete.
- Change cubic meters to cubic yards because that’s how the concrete is usually measured. Do this by dividing 27 (3 feet by 3 feet by 3 feet). The equation looks like this: 99.9 / 27 = 3.7 cubic yards (2.82 cu m). You will need 3.7 cubic yards to pave an area 4 inches thick which is 25 meters long and 12 wide.
